Fantastic Contraptions

Students in 3rd grade are using their makerspace time this week to create Rube Goldberg machines. They are using objects normally in the makerspace such as Hot Wheel track and marbles, as well as recyclable objects such as dominoes, boxes, yarn, cardboard tubes and chenille stems to create their contraptions.   These are practice rounds as most students have never made one and most were just introduced to the concept via YouTube videos.  They were so excited and engaged for this project. Students self-selected partners and materials. Lots of test / fail / and try again methods were evident, but students were undeterred to complete their task.

This week is a preparation week for our upcoming STEAM projects. Third graders will be making their own fantastic contraptions at home explaining their design cycle process as part of their project. They will document with text, photos and videos so we can all share in the fun. We can’t wait to see what they create!
